The slums are a sadly common sight in Metro Manila. Whether it’s riverside (as in this picture), along railroad tracks, or within spitting distance of urban areas, slum communities can be found practically everywhere. Most of the people living here left the provinces to go to Manila hoping for a good life here, or are descendants of those who did so many years ago. Despite not finding the good life here, they have decided not to return to their province of origin.

This week’s TravelTuesday Picture of the Week shows one of many slum communities we saw on the Pasig River Ferry trip my friends and I took two weeks ago. The people living by the river have been frequently cited as one of the reasons why Pasig River remains polluted. They have been using the river to wash themselves and their clothing, and to dump their waste. On our ferry trip, we saw first-hand some of these activities. There were many slum communities along the river.
