Patuxay is a monument in the center of Vientiane, the capital of Laos. Built in 1957 and completed in 1968, Patuxay, which means “victory monument,” is a memorial for the soldiers who died fighting for the independence of Laos from the French. Ironically, this structure is frequently compared to the Arc de Triomphe in Paris due to its general resemblance to the French landmark. As there is a law prohibiting the construction of buildings taller than Patuxay, it is the highest point in the Vientiane city proper.
