NBA Hoop Dreams in Vigan - Click to View Hi-Res Image

This week’s TravelTuesday Picture of the Week isn’t about the usual must-sees on one’s travels; it’s about the little things that spark your interest, no matter how seemingly mundane. On our first day in Vigan, my friend Didang and I simply walked around, exploring the city and taking it all in. We snapped pictures wherever we went, and got a taste of what life in Vigan must be like. We found out that although things may be different in other provinces in the Philippines, some things remain the same. This picture illustrates one of those things: The Filipino people’s love for basketball. Here in Metro Manila, many sidestreets have a basketball court or hoop which range from the professionally-made to the improvised. Atone house in Vigan, we found this improvised mini-hoop, presumably used by the kids who live there. It even has “NBA ASTIG” written on the backboard. (“Astig,” loosely translated, means “cool.”) It was proof that this love for basketball was a national phenomenon and not limited to Metro Manila. It was also interesting for us to see something that looked so seemingly idiosyncratic amidst the Spanish colonial themes of Vigan.

I hope you enjoyed this TravelTuesday Picture of the Week. Enjoy the rest of TravelTuesday on Twitter and follow me @hyperren. Come back next week for another PotW!
