Two weeks ago (17 October), I attended Travel Massive Singapore at Harry’s Bar in SUNTEC. What is Travel Massive? In their own words, “Travel Massive is a global initiative to connect people in the travel industry locally, bringing together travel bloggers, brands, startups and socially engaged travelers.” As a travel blogger with 35 daily visits, 1,831 Twitter followers, and a Klout score of 54*, I felt compelled to join in.

Travel Massive Singapore had the good fortune of being scheduled at the same time as the Web in Travel conference. As such, there were a lot of people from different aspects of travel and the travel industry present. I was worried about being relative small fry among such big… fry. Thankfully, I immediately met Travel Massive’s founder, Ian, who – despite quickly informing me that there were no more free drinks – instantly made me feel at ease. He then introduced me to Travel Massive Singapore’s organizer, Matt of Travel with a Mate. I had a great chat with both Ian and Matt, and soon, I was doing my best schmoozing. Here’s the official Travel Massive Singapore video Ian and Matt put together:

What I liked about the event was how casual and relaxed the atmosphere was. It was easy to insert yourself in the little pockets of conversation that were going on. I met a lot of different people who were doing many different interesting things in travel (such as Flocations, a Singapore-based travel startup). I met some people whom I’d been following and chatting with on Twitter, and met new people whom I’d connected with since. There were a lot of interesting travel-related topics discussed, such as the challenges of being a travel blogger, as well as the crazy ways people and companies try to “game” SEO. It was a great networking event, as evidenced by the number of business cards I exchanged that night. (Also, my hat made quite the impression.)

After the event proper ended, I joined some of the attendees for a delicious Thai dinner at the Golden Mile Complex. Over dinner, we had a rather relaxed conversation about that thing we all enjoyed, travel. Our group – which included Dave of Globejotter Tours, Peter of Travellerspoint, Stuart of Travelfish, and Tanya of I Dream of Durian – started sharing all sorts of crazy stories and anecdotes from our own experiences. Definitely fun.

Would I attend another Travel Massive event? Definitely. And in the interest of full disclosure, I may be more involved in future Travel Massive Singapore events. But even if that doesn’t pan out, Travel Massive is a great way of seeing different sides of the travel sphere, and of course meeting other like-minded individuals.

EDIT: It’s official: I am one of the organizers for the next Travel Massive Singapore! This November’s Travel Massive Singapore will be held at Siem Reap I at Holland Village on 21 November, starting at around 6 or 7pm. RSVP here. Hope to see you there!

*All figures as of 29 October. Yes, I’m aware the numbers are not that impressive. It was intended as a joke… and now it’s no longer funny.
