August 10th, 2010Picture of the Week, Singapore, TravelTuesdayThis is a big week for Singapore! Yesterday was National Day, which was celebrated with a parade and fireworks. And on Saturday, the inaugural Youth Olympic Games will be having its opening ceremonies (which I will be attending). All over Singapore, the Singapore flag, the Youth Olympic Games flag, and other related paraphernalia have been decorating the city-state. It’s a great time to be in Singapore!

July 27th, 2010Malaysia, Melaka, Picture of the Week, TravelTuesdayThe Christ Church in Melaka (Malacca), Malaysia is a Dutch colonial Protestant church. Construction began in 1741 and was completed in 1753 (as inscribed on the face of the church). Originally built by the Dutch, it was re-consecrated with the rites of the Church of England (and renamed Christ Church) in 1838, following transfer of Melaka from the Dutch to the British. In 1911, the white Christ Church was repainted to its current red color.

July 20th, 2010Dumaguete, Negros Oriental, Philippines, Picture of the Week, TravelTuesdayDumaguete is the capital city of Negros Oriental, a province in the Visayas region of the Philippines. The city is a laid back college town, anchored by Silliman University, the first Protestant and American private school in the Philippines. The seaside city has a sizable expat community, and is a popular launching pad for destinations such as Apo Island, Bohol, and Cebu.
Rizal Boulevard is the main thoroughfare in Dumaguete. It also makes for a nice seaside stroll, and this photo shows how calm and peaceful that walk can be.

July 6th, 2010Cambodia, Picture of the Week, Siem Reap, TravelTuesdayThe Tonle Sap is a large combined river and lake system in Cambodia. It is also the largest freshwater lake in Southeast Asia. On my last day in Siem Reap, I made a trip to the Tonle Sap to see the community living on it. There was everything from floating homes to floating schools and churches, and even a floating basketball court. This photo shows one of the common sights on the Tonle Sap, ferrying goods on the lake through a boat.

June 15th, 2010Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, Picture of the Week, TravelTuesdayThe Petronas Towers are the world’s tallest twin towers, but you can’t view the city from the top; free tickets can only take you to the Skybridge on the 41st and 42nd floors. On the other hand, you can go all the way to the top of the KL Tower (the fifth tallest telecommunication tower in the world). This grants you a great view of the city, and as you can see in this photo, you can view the Petronas Towers from this vantage point. There are even guides in the tower that helpfully point out what exactly you’re looking at from above.
